This memorial was so important because it originally started as a painting made to honor all the soldiers. It symbolized the war and was up for everyone to see. The designer of the memorial was Horace Peaslee. There were more than 6,800 American casualties and 23,000 Japanese. The figures are 32 ft. high. The memorial was dedicated by president Dwight D. Eisenhower. Th capture of the island Iwo Jima was done by about 70,000 marines.

With the six soldiers who were left only three of them actually survived because the other three had died in a later on fight with more men from Iwo Jima.
